King William used surprisingly modern methods to dominate his new subjects after his victory over the Anglo-Saxons at the Battle of Hastings in October 1066. He had no problem employing actual violence - he had a passion for destruction - but he also achieved cultural hegemony over his subjects by trying to stamp out their customs and practices.
