William the (proto-postmodern) Conqueror

England's brutal new King William knew a thing our two about dominating the discourse and achieving cultural hegemony long before the Marxists and Postmodernists started writing up their theories

King William used surprisingly modern methods to dominate his new subjects after his victory over the Anglo-Saxons at the Battle of Hastings in October 1066. He had no problem employing actual violence - he had a passion for destruction - but he also achieved cultural hegemony over his subjects by trying to stamp out their customs and practices.
