Earlier this century (grandiose way of saying, I'm getting really old and time is marching on), I lived on the former Rowntree estate in York. There was a palpable sense of how much the family had contributed to the city and I'm sure the sense of philanthropy and reform influenced me subliminally. I ended up researching the representation of women in parliament and the economics of education. If only some of our contemporary industrialists and politicians had the same moral awareness.

I grew up in York and back in the 1960s nearly everyone on our housing estate either worked, or had worked, or was going to work, at Rowntrees … and as I said in that story I worked there myself as a teenager for 10 weeks or so! This is so interesting. I knew that Rowntree was a reformer but always associated with the incredible Zelig of our time, Ignaz Trebisch Lincoln.
